POST 30: Render Tests with Skin (experimentation/development)

Now the models have been created I now need to give them a correct looking skin texture. The following images show my tests in the process:

These tests were rather easy to produce because of my understanding of subsurface scattering that I learned from studying the material of leaves.

For now, this is good enough. I am going to change the dreaded hair on the male because it just looks odd.

POST 29: Male Hair Conception and Development (experimentation and development)

Just like with the female model I have drawn 3d hair in concept then used the same technique to create the mesh. I have also included the posing/rigging process prior to the hair creation.

POST 28: Hair Conception and Development (experimentation/development)

I have used the female model to experiment the hair on. In Zbrush I get to create the hair either by drawing it on or by clicking points from the head down her back. These points will then be adaptively skinned together to create the mesh of that strand.

I have decided to create dreaded hair because modelling normal hair would be too hard. These following videos are my recorded workflow in double speed... I have also cut unessential parts out. As usual just skim through it.

This first video is just playing around with the base and trying to create leaves that fitted into it. This experiment failed.

This video is the processes of drawing hair and and trial leaf set in her hair.

This video shows the successful process of creating the dreaded hair. It was a fun process that took a few hours.

This next experimentation was an attempt to create a head band:

I am pleased with the progress with the hair. The same kind of hair will be applied to the male. All that I am doing now with the female will be similarly applied to the male.

POST 27: Rigging the Male and Female (experimentation)

Both the male and female have to be posed together into a figurative composition. This is my first attempt at rigging them together:

Again I played around with some concept hair as well.

A few images from the process:

I know it looks like he is kneeing her in the face but oh well good job this is just a practise :)

POST 26: Rigging/Posing (experimentation)

I have now fully textured the models with a skin texture. Now, finally, I can get dynamic with the models and stop working with them in a 'T-pose.'

This process of rigging is simply posing the model - moving their limbs around. I have always been attracted to dance or action poses so that is what I am going to try first.

Here is a slideshow of my first experimentation with rigging:

I have also been playing around with the idea of big hair.

A few images from the process:

This is a good looking glitch.

POST 25: Painting and Texturing (experimentation and research)

Now as I have the human models created for my scene I have an idea of how to texture them. I remember when I bought the Art of Avatar book I saw this set of images:

I loved the way that monkey alien thing was textured. So I thought I might give something like that a try with my models.

My idea is to paint each muscle as a petal from a flower. I think the strands of detail in the petals will work with the flow of the muscles. Here is a vision board of flowers:

The videos below are slideshows of my attempt to create this:

A few images from this experimentation:

I was not satisfied with these results so my alternative might be to just texture the models with a generic skin texture.

POST 24: Initiate Final Development (devleopment and research)

This post generalises a lot of work in a space of a few weeks. I have created the male model and female model. 90% of the time was spent on the male and 10% on the female. Not only because the female figure is a bit easier but because I had so much practise with the male model that the female model was just easy. I created her in one day.

This first video is my draft development of the male model. It is more like an ecorche because I was focusing on the muscles and I did not fill in the face. (Just like with most videos, just skip through them because they are basically slideshow)

Here are some images I used for reference to understand and sculpt the male model:

This second video is a complete development of the female model:

Here is an image collection of all the references I used for sculpting the female model:

The male model had to go through a massive redevelopment due to technical stuff and I did not think to show it's development but it's basically the same process as in the above videos.
